Real trees in 3D: tree registers and AHN in Alpha

Existing greenery matters when assessing a home design. A tree affects the view from a window, shade on a facade and the character of a street. An arbitrary row of decorative trees says little about the real surroundings.

The vegetation layer in Alpha therefore uses public data. Species and positions come from tree registers, while heights are derived from AHN laser data. Species determine crown shape and colour, so a red beech retains its characteristic colour in the model.

Our demonstration around Amstelpark in Amsterdam shows more than 600 registered trees within a 400-metre radius. Those figures describe this particular location and dataset. The demonstration shows registered greenery alongside buildings to create a recognisable setting.

For location assessment and design discussions, this helps teams explore sightlines and shade in context. Quality and coverage depend on the source data available. The viewer makes those records accessible in the same 3D environment used to work on the plan.
